U-Box vs PODS: Which Moving Container Should You Pick?

The short answer: moving a studio or one bedroom on a tight budget — U-Box usually costs less. Moving two bedrooms or more, or you want unlimited time to load — PODS is the safer bet. Either way you get the same hybrid deal: you pack and load, they drive.

Where the two actually disagree

Who's cheaper? It depends on how much you're moving. One mover priced PODS, U-Pack, and U-Box for the same Arizona-to-Florida move and U-Box won outright. But moving guides keep ranking U-Pack as the hardest quote to beat overall — and describe U-Box as the cheapest option specifically for small moves: studios, dorms, single bedrooms. Read that together and the rule is simple. Under ~1.5 rooms of stuff, U-Box. Above that, collect all three quotes before you decide.

Wood vs. steel isn't just trivia. U-Box containers are plywood with a steel frame (a weatherproof cover comes with each one); PODS builds around a steel frame. The plywood box survived a full cross-country trip without a scratch — but on a sloped driveway, its door jammed and wouldn't close until the driver re-seated the entire container with a forklift. Wood flexes under load. Steel doesn't.

Loading time works differently. PODS parks the container in your driveway and the clock on loading is essentially unlimited — a genuine edge over U-Pack, which caps you at three days per end. U-Box rents by the month with scheduled drop-off and pickup; in practice that's flexible too (one move ran Monday to Friday), but you're paying monthly while you dawdle.

The lock question. Neither company hands you one — you supply your own padlock for both (PODS specifies a 2¾-inch disc lock or a 1¾-inch padlock). Either way, only you hold the key.

Details most comparisons skip

Reserve more containers than you need. U-Box lets you book two containers and pay only for the ones you actually use. U-Pack runs the same policy on its ReloCubes — and if you discover mid-load that you need one more, U-Pack can usually deliver extra cubes if you call, though delivery fees may apply. PODS prices per reserved container, so size it right the first time.

U-Box has a tow-it-yourself option. If you have a truck, U-Haul will let you haul the container to your new home yourself instead of paying for their shipping. Every U-Box also carries a scannable barcode — but it only shows the last scan checkpoint, not a live dot on a map.

U-Box phone support can be rough. One mover spent 45 minutes on hold just trying to change a pickup date during peak season. Book dates you're confident about.

PODS runs a tight delivery operation. You get a text with a 3-hour window the day before, the driver calls 30 minutes out, and drivers have threaded containers into driveways with inches to spare. You also don't need your final address to book — handy when your lease is still up in the air — and about a week's notice for pickup is the norm.

Strap from the back. If you use ratchet straps, anchor them at the back of the container before you start loading. Once the box is full, you can't climb in to reach them. Stretch wrap is cheap at any hardware store — wrap the furniture. Buy mattress bags. And don't let a sofa sit directly on the container floor; it'll pick up grime you'll be vacuuming out later.

Rain isn't the enemy you think. PODS containers are water-resistant, not waterproof — but one sat in a driveway through days of rain and stayed bone-dry inside. For longer storage, toss in a DampRid moisture absorber and sticky bug traps by the door: one customer pulled three containers out of short-term storage to find all three infested with mice.

If PODS can't fit your street, two alternatives worth knowing: 1-800-PACK-RAT will match competitors' prices and uses a different door design than PODS' roll-up door; Zippy Shell's smaller containers park like an ordinary car, built for city moves. And U-Pack's ReloCube can split a move in ways the others can't — ship one cube, store another, or send two cubes to two different cities.

What you only learn by doing it

The details below come from documented moves between 2018 and 2022 — the kind of thing brochures never print.

The meter starts the day the container lands in your driveway — and that driveway box isn't climate-controlled (only the company's storage facility is). One family loaded theirs in 100–103°F summer heat (2020) and packed heat-sensitive items last, hours before pickup.

Always ask for a discount when you book by phone. One mover knocked $50 a month off multi-month storage just by asking (2020).

Budget for the storage you'll actually use, not the storage you plan. One couple estimated six months, kept the container 21 — and paid for every one of those months. Final tab: $5,850.44. (2020–2022)

Delivery drivers can damage your property too: one drop-off clipped a carport roof, though the company said it would cover the claim. On the plus side, 21 months in storage left that same container's contents essentially untouched — no moisture, no bugs. One dead bat. (2020–2022)

Pack it like a burrito: fill every gap so nothing shifts, and use same-size boxes so your stacks line up with no voids. Wrap furniture drawers and doors shut — they'll swing open in transit and crack whatever sits next to them. (2020)

With U-Pack's trailer, you slide the wooden bulkhead boards in wherever your load ends and pay only for the space behind them. Text them when you're done; they collect the trailer the next day. (2018 account)

Book first, haggle second: one mover booked PODS, then called to cancel — and watched more than $1,000 come off the original quote. State your budget or mention a competing quote and hold firm. (2024)

Measure the inside, not the brochure. A professional mover found PODS' quoted dimensions were outside measurements — the interior ran so small his client had to order a second container. (2021)

U-Box has no live tracking, so bring your own: put an AirTag in the box. One customer's box was picked up early, then went silent for weeks — no updates until it finally surfaced about two weeks late. (2024)

Inspect your U-Boxes at pickup. One arrived with its door bolted shut — the box was falling apart — and U-Haul hadn't said a word. (2025)

FAQ

How much does a U-Box actually cost?

Real-move averages run ~$562 local, ~$1,895 for ~500 miles, ~$2,627 for ~1,200 miles (hireAHelper, 2026). For reference, one itemized cross-country PODS move (16-ft container, Indianapolis to Los Angeles, 2020) totaled $3,372: $507.59 first bill, $239.99/month rental, ~$2,500 transport, $297.57 redelivery. Another documented 2020 move (California to Kansas) ran $2,811 for transport, under $3,500 all-in before storage months.

What fits in one U-Box?

About 1–1.5 rooms: 257 cubic feet, 2,000 lb limit (U-Haul). A king-size mattress fits.

Does PODS have a small option?

Yes — the 7-ft container covers 1–2 rooms. Note the 12-ft container is local-moves-only.

Is my stuff insured?

Not by default with U-Box — add SafeStor® (storage) or SafeHaul® (shipping) coverage. PODS sells contents protection as an add-on.

Can I move a U-Box myself?

Yes. U-Haul's tow-it-yourself option lets you haul the container with a rented truck; otherwise they ship it.

How far ahead should I book?

About a week of lead time for pickup scheduling is typical; more in summer peak season.
